Bell Flat Hill

Bell Flat Hill isn't the sort of peak that'll stop you in your tracks from a distance - it's more of a proper walker's climb than a dramatic fell. That said, the trudge up from Skipton way rewards you with decent views across the Ribble Valley and the surrounding moorland. On a clear day you can see a fair bit of Lancashire laid out below, which makes the effort worthwhile if you're already in the area.

This is squarely for walkers who enjoy steady leg work rather than technical scrambling. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find it a slog without much scenery to break up the monotony. History buffs won't find much here - it's the landscape itself that's the draw, not ruins or ancient sites.

Allow a couple of hours return if you're starting from Skipton. There's no visitor centre or facilities on the hill itself, so bring water and snacks. It's free to walk, naturally. Spring and autumn are your best bets - summer gets muggy and winter can be boggy underfoot.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Thornton Hall Country Park or Holgates Ribble Valley, Bell Flat Hill works as a half-day outing that won't compete with bigger attractions in the Dales.
