Beld Knowe

Beld Knowe rises abruptly from the rolling moorland just north of Moffat, and on a clear day the walk up rewards you with views that stretch across the Southern Uplands proper. It's not a mountain - more a proper Lowland hill - but that's exactly why it works so well as a half-day outing when you're based at one of the caravan sites around Moffat.

The ascent takes around 40 minutes from the road, and the path is fairly straightforward moorland walking. Nothing technical, no scrambling, just steady gradient through heather and grass. Walkers get the most from this one - it's the kind of place where you can actually make progress and tick something off without needing rock shoes or a map and compass. Families with children aged eight upwards will manage it fine, though younger kids might find the moorland a bit samey on the way up.

You're free to visit, naturally enough. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, just the wind and the view. That's rather the point. On a foggy afternoon you'll see about thirty metres in each direction, so timing matters - go when the forecast is decent.

Stay at Howslack Farm or Moffat Camping Club Site and you've got decent access without needing to drive far. Pair it with a walk round the Moffat hills themselves or a stroll down to the Grey Mare's Tail waterfall nearby, and you've got a solid day sorted. The Southern Uplands won't blow your mind like the Highlands, but Beld Knowe proves they've got their own quiet appeal.
