Beinn nan Oighreag

The walk up Beinn nan Oighreag is straightforward enough, which makes it popular with hikers who want height without the full Ben Lui commitment. Near Killin, this peak sits on the eastern edge of the Tay Forest Park, and on a clear day the views across Perthshire are genuinely worth the slog.

Expect steep forest tracks early on, then open moorland once you break the treeline. The summit's nothing fancy - a cairn and decent visibility if you're lucky - but the vantage point over Loch Tay and towards the bigger peaks of the Southern Highlands is proper. The whole thing takes a couple of hours there and back for most walkers, though fit types will do it quicker.

This is walker territory, frankly. It's not technical enough to interest rock climbers, and the approach lacks the drama of some other Perthshire hills. Families with older children (say, eight upwards and reasonably confident) will manage it fine. Young kids might find the slog dull.

The real advantage is proximity to Loch Tay Highland Lodges & Glamping Park just a few miles south - park up there, wake early, and bag this one before lunch. It works well as a warm-up walk if you're planning bigger peaks nearby, or as a solo mission if you want fresh air without the crowds you'd find on Ben Lui or Ben Vorlich. Free access as with most Scottish hills.
