Beinn na Duatharach

Beinn na Duatharach rises on the Isle of Mull, and getting to the top means real effort - steep ground, rocky sections, and the kind of exposed ridge that demands respect for the weather. On a clear day though, the views across the Hebrides are absolutely worth the slog.

This is a walker's mountain, full stop. If you're after a casual stroll with the kids, look elsewhere. But if you've got decent boots and don't mind the grind, the summit delivers proper Argyll drama - water, islands, and hills stretching for miles. Most people allow three to four hours for the round trip from the usual starting point, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

Timing matters here. Spring through early autumn gives you the best window - winter winds on this ridge are no joke. And come early, because Mull's weather can turn on a sixpence. The peak itself is free to climb, naturally. No visitor centre, no facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and something to eat.
