Beinn Mheadhoin

The walk up Beinn Mheadhoin demands proper legs and a decent weather window, but the reward is a proper mountain experience without the tourist crush you'd find elsewhere in the Cairngorms. At 3,614 feet, it's high enough to feel like an achievement yet manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness and navigation skills.

The route typically starts from Glenmore, south of Inverness, and takes you through pine forest before opening onto moorland and then serious mountainside. The final push to the summit is steep but straightforward. What strikes you on top is the isolation - you're surrounded by the Cairngorm plateau with views stretching toward Ben Avon and Braemar, and frankly, you'll often have the place to yourself.

It's a walkers' mountain rather than a casual stroll. Allow five to six hours for a round trip, and you'll need a map and compass or a good GPS app because the plateau can be featureless in mist. The best time is late spring through early autumn when snow clears and daylight extends. Winter ascents need winter skills.
