Beinn Lunndaidh

This 2,416-metre peak sits in proper remote Highland territory, a fair walk inland from the Dornoch coast. You're looking at a serious hill - not a casual afternoon stroll, but the kind of route that rewards proper effort with views that stretch to the north coast when the weather cooperates.

The ascent isn't technical, but it is relentless. Most folk take it from the south side, a grinding climb through moorland that gets steeper as you climb. The summit's a proper alpine feeling place - wind-blasted, rocky, and genuinely exposed to the elements. On a clear day you'll see across to Ben Loyal and west towards the mountains around Ullapool.

This is squarely a walker's hill, and a seasoned one at that. Bring good boots, waterproofs you actually trust, and a map - the cloud can roll in fast up here. Allow five to six hours for the round trip if you're moderately fit. It's free, obviously. Winter attempts demand mountaineering experience and proper kit.

If you're based at Grannie's Heilan' Hame near Sutherland, you're about an hour's drive away. It's worth the trip if you're into serious walking and don't mind solitude - you won't see crowds up here. But honestly, come only if you're genuinely prepared for mountain conditions. The views are excellent on a good day, but they don't make up for wet, miserable weather on a bad one. Check conditions carefully before you head out.
