Beinn Ghlas

The walk up Beinn Ghlas from Killin takes about three hours there and back, and honestly, it's one of those Scottish peaks that rewards proper effort without demanding mountaineering skills. You start near the village and the path climbs steadily through moorland, opening up to proper views across Loch Tay as you gain height. The summit sits at 997 metres, just shy of Munro status, which means it gets decent footfall but never feels rammed.

What makes it worthwhile is the payoff. On a clear day - and you'll want to time this for clear weather - you're looking out over Perthshire rolling away in every direction, with Ben Lawers dominating nearby. The ridge walk between Beinn Ghlas and Ben Lawers is spectacular if you've got the energy and the light's good. Allow four to five hours if you're going the full loop.

It's excellent for experienced walkers who want a proper hill day without overcommitting to a full Munro. Families with older kids manage it, though the descent can be tough on young knees. Spring through autumn works best, though Scottish weather being what it is, check conditions before you go.
