Beinn Bhàn

The walk up Beinn Bhàn from Lochgilphead is steeper than it looks on the map, but the payoff justifies the effort. You're climbing into proper Highland terrain, and once you crest the ridge, the views down Loch Fyne are something else - water stretching away in both directions, islands dotted across it, and on a clear day you can see right across to Cowal.

It's a peak rather than a gentle stroll, so this is for walkers with decent fitness. Allow three to four hours for the round trip depending on pace and how long you linger at the top. The terrain underfoot is rough in places, particularly higher up where loose rock wants watching. Most people tackle it as a day walk from Lochgilphead itself, which is handy if you're based in the town.

Historically, this isn't somewhere with much of a back story - it's pure landscape rather than heritage. That actually works in its favour. No crowds, no tearoom hustle, just the hill and the view. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the whole thing.

If you're staying at The Pod Over By - a smart little holiday park just down the road - Beinn Bhàn makes a proper day out without needing to drive far. On a wet day it's punishing, so pick your weather. Worth the climb though.
