Bedd-y-cawr Hillfort

You're standing on a windswept ridge above Conwy with views that stretch across North Wales, looking at what's left of an Iron Age settlement. Bedd-y-cawr - the name means "giant's grave" in Welsh - is a hillfort that's been here for roughly two thousand years, though what you see now is mostly earthworks and the ghost of defensive ditches.

It's not dramatic in the way some hillforts are. There are no towering ramparts or obvious structures to photograph. What you get instead is the chance to walk where ancient people walked, to stand where they stood watching the valleys below. History types will find it satisfying; families might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are already keen on archaeology.
