Beck Ing Plantation

Beck Ing Plantation sits on the outskirts of Settle, a proper working woodland rather than some manicured visitor attraction. It's the sort of place you stumble upon while rambling the Dales, not somewhere you'd necessarily plan a trip around - but if you're camping at Peaks and Pods or The Dalesbridge Campsite nearby, it's well worth an hour's wander.

The plantation itself is ancient mixed woodland, thick with birch and pine, cutting through limestone country. There's something quieter about it than the open moorland surrounding Settle. The paths aren't heavily marked, which means you need a map or decent local knowledge, but that's half the appeal. You'll see the beck itself running through - proper Yorkshire water, brown and quick when it rains.

Historically it's interesting if you're into industrial archaeology. The area fed mills further downstream, and you can spot old workings if you know where to look. For families with young kids it's a bit hit and miss - the paths can be muddy and overgrown, and there's no playground or visitor facilities. Serious walkers and history types will get more from it than casual strollers.

It's free to access and open year-round, though autumn and early spring are best - summer can be thick with midges and overgrown brambles. Allow two hours if you're exploring properly rather than just threading through. It sits well within a broader Settle walking holiday, mixing woodland with the limestone country that makes the Dales worth visiting in the first place.
