Beauly Free Church

The Free Church in Beauly sits right in the heart of the village, a solid Victorian building that speaks to the area's religious split from the 1840s onwards. You're looking at a proper kirk with that distinctive Scottish church feel - austere but dignified, the kind of place that tells you something about Highland culture without needing a tour guide to explain it.

It's not a ruin or a historical theme park. This is a working church, so what you get depends on timing. Pop in during opening hours and you'll see the interior - straightforward pews, decent windows, the sort of honest architecture that puts you right in 19th-century Scotland. The exterior alone is worth photographing if you're into church architecture, and the graveyard round back has some interesting stones if you fancy a wander.

History buffs will appreciate the context. The split between the Established Church and the Free Church was massive in Scottish life, and walking round Beauly you can read the whole story in the buildings. Families won't find interactive exhibits or activities - there's nothing to occupy bored kids for long. But if you're based at Beauly Holiday Park or one of the other caravan spots within a few miles, it's a decent stop on a village walk. Fifteen minutes maximum, unless you're really into ecclesiastical history.
