Beaufort Castle

The ruins sit on a grassy mound just outside Beauly, commanding the landscape in a way that makes you understand why someone bothered to build here in the first place. Beaufort Castle isn't a complete structure - you're looking at substantial fragments of medieval stonework, enough to give you a proper sense of what the fortress once was, but not so intact that you're wandering through furnished rooms.

It's a short walk from the town centre, and the setting matters more than the stones themselves. The mound elevation means decent views across the surrounding countryside, and there's something satisfying about clambering up to explore the foundations and work out where the different buildings stood. History buffs will appreciate the 13th-century origins, though there's not much interpretation on site, so you'll want to read up beforehand if you're keen on the details.

Really, this works best as a brief stop rather than a day's entertainment - forty minutes to an hour covers it properly. Family groups with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're genuinely interested in castles; teenagers or keen walkers tend to get more from it. The location between Beauly Holiday Park and Highland Premier Glamping Pods means it slots easily into a wider Highland exploration - worth a detour if you're staying in the area, though not worth driving out of your way for alone.
