Bear Pit

Leeds has plenty of Georgian squares and Victorian arcades to keep you occupied, but the Bear Pit - a genuine medieval animal pit from the 12th century - is the real conversation piece. It's barely signposted, honestly, which only adds to the appeal. You're looking at a sunken stone arena where bears and other creatures were once baited for public entertainment, a pretty grim reminder of what passed for a good night out centuries ago. The site itself is compact, more of a historical marker than a sprawling attraction, so don't expect to spend hours here. Twenty minutes of poking around and reading the information boards is about right, unless you're properly into medieval social history.

It works best if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - St Helena's, Glenfield, or Moor Lodge are all within six miles - and treating it as part of a wider Leeds exploration rather than a standalone day out. The town centre is close enough for a walk, so you could tie it in with shopping, museums, or decent lunch spots. Kids might find it a bit dull unless they're interested in the gruesome bits, but for anyone keen on Yorkshire's medieval past, it's worth tracking down. The city's close enough to make a decent base for exploring the wider region, though the pit itself won't take long. Free to visit, no facilities, and best in daylight when you can actually see into the depression properly.
