Beacon Hill

The walk up Beacon Hill rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Dorset landscape - on a clear day you can see right across to the coast. It's a genuine summit, not some inflated tourist trap, which means the climb is real work but the payoff is genuine.

What you're actually doing here is walking an Iron Age hillfort. The earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking at - concentric rings of ancient defences that once meant something to someone. Whether that fascinates you or passes you by depends entirely on your tolerance for archaeology without plaques.

The walk itself takes about 45 minutes from Dorchester, though timing depends on your fitness and how many times you stop for breath. Bring proper boots if it's been wet - the slopes get slippery. It's free, obviously, since it's just a hill. Kids will either love scrambling up or complain the entire way; there's no middle ground.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Parkdean Resorts Warmwell or Crossways Caravan Club are both within 4 miles - this makes a solid morning activity before heading to the coast proper. Pair it with Dorchester town centre afterwards if you want something less vertical. The views justify the effort, but it's not a casual stroll. Go when the weather's settled.
