Baynham's Coppice

A proper woodland walk just outside Ledbury, Baynham's Coppice is the sort of place you stumble into and wonder why you haven't been before. It's ancient woodland - the kind where the trees are gnarled and thick, the paths wind through a carpet of last year's leaves, and you can actually hear yourself think. Nothing fancy, no visitor centre or cafe, just trees doing what trees do.

The walk itself takes you through mixed woodland with plenty of shade even on bright days. It's ideal if you've got restless kids who need to burn off energy without the pressure of a "proper" tourist attraction, or if you're after a decent ramble before heading back to base. Walkers will find it straightforward enough - the paths are clear if a bit muddy after rain. Birdwatchers sometimes report good sightings here, and in spring the bluebells can be rather lovely.

Allow an hour for a gentle circuit, longer if you're the type to stop and look at moss. Entry appears to be free, which is refreshing. Ledbury itself is close by if you need a proper lunch afterwards - the town's worth a look on its own merit.

It won't transform your week, but it's exactly what you need when you want to leave the car park behind without faffing about with tickets and crowds.
