Barrow

Barrow sits just above Keswick, a modest fell that punches well above its weight for effort-to-reward ratio. It's not dramatic or demanding - you're looking at a straightforward walk of maybe an hour up from the town, with views across Derwentwater and the surrounding fells that genuinely take your breath away once you're up there. The summit is properly exposed on a clear day, which makes even the relatively gentle ascent feel like you've earned something.

This is walker territory, absolutely, but not exclusively. Fit families with kids who've got the stamina will manage it fine - it's steep enough to feel like an achievement without being soul-destroying. The path is well-trodden and clear most of the year, though it gets boggy in places when the rain's been heavy, which is often enough in Cumbria.

What makes Barrow work is its proximity to Keswick itself. You can be on the summit in an hour from the town centre, which means it's brilliant for a half-day excursion if you're based at one of the nearby parks. Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club is only 2.2 miles away, and Castlerigg Hall (the five-star spot) is just 3.4 miles - both within spitting distance. Combine it with a morning in Keswick town, grab a packed lunch, and you've got a solid afternoon sorted.

Go when it's clear - mist up here kills the whole experience stone dead. Spring or autumn are your best bets; summer crowds are a pain, and winter can be genuine boots-and-gaiters territory.
