Barlby & Osgodby Methodist Church

The Methodist chapel sitting on the edge of Barlby, just outside Goole, isn't going to stop traffic. But if you're the sort who finds something moving about a working Victorian chapel, this one's worth a detour. Red brick, proper functional architecture - no fussy Gothic Revival nonsense here. Inside, the original fixtures are still doing their job: wooden pews worn smooth by generations of worshippers, a gallery that's seen better days, the kind of place that reminds you how ordinary people actually practised their faith, not in grand cathedrals but in modest rooms like this.

It's a half-hour visit at most, and you'd need to catch someone to open it up - not the sort of place with a gift shop and signing-in book. Worth phoning ahead if you're keen. This chapel appeals to church historians and anyone interested in Methodist heritage, particularly those researching family connections. Kids will find it quiet and a bit dull unless they're genuinely into old buildings.

While you're staying at York South Ltd or Cawood Park - both excellent bases nearby - you could combine it with a walk through Barlby village itself. It's the sort of trip that works better as part of a larger day exploring the quieter bits of North Yorkshire rather than as a standalone attraction. Go if you're already in the area and curious about local history. Don't plan your holiday around it.
