Bargatton Loch

The water here is dark and still, ringed by low hills that don't announce themselves loudly. Bargatton Loch sits quietly in the Dumfries and Galloway landscape, a few miles south of Castle Douglas, and it's the sort of place you visit because you're already in the area rather than plan a trip around.

It's a proper freshwater loch - good for a walk round the shore if you've got an hour to spare, and there's enough tree cover to make it pleasant even when the weather's turning. The banks aren't dramatic, but they're peaceful, which is rather the point. You might see fishermen here, or the occasional heron. Kids will manage a loop walk without too much moaning, though they won't be clamouring to come back.

Free to visit, naturally. Park up and wander. The nearest facilities are back in Castle Douglas, so come prepared if you're planning a longer stay. Best in dry weather when the paths aren't waterlogged - after heavy rain, bits of the shoreline get a touch boggy.

For a park-based holiday, this works as a quiet add-on. Galloway Glamping and Mollance Farm Caravan Park (both five-star rated) are within easy reach if you want somewhere comfortable to return to. Loch Ken Holiday Park is closer still at just over five miles away, though it's a step down in reviews. Use Bargatton as a gentle evening stroll before dinner rather than the main event.
