Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden

The Barbara Hepworth Museum sits in St Ives, housed in the artist's former studio with her sculpture garden sprawling out behind it. Walking through the rooms feels intimate - you're literally standing where she worked, surrounded by her bronze and wooden pieces. The garden itself is the real draw though. Abstract sculptures sit among mature trees and plants, and there's a genuine sense of how Hepworth thought about space and landscape together rather than treating them as separate things.

This is unmissably good if you care about mid-20th century sculpture or modern art in general. History buffs and artists will spend a solid two hours here without feeling rushed. Families with young children might find it a bit dry unless they're already into art - the pieces don't have the obvious appeal of a traditional museum, and there's not much to do besides look and read.

The garden works year-round, though spring and early summer when things are growing properly around the sculptures is genuinely lovely. Allow at least ninety minutes if you want to actually absorb it rather than rush through.

If you're based at Polmanter Touring Park or St Ives Holiday Village, both within walking distance of town, you can easily spend a morning here then head down to the beaches or galleries that make St Ives what it is. It's not a full-day attraction, but it's the sort of place that sticks with you after you've left.
