Bank Wood

Bank Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside York, the kind of place you'll stumble onto if you're exploring the quieter corners of the Vale of York. It's not massive - you can get through it in an hour or so - but the paths are decent and there's genuine peace among the trees, which is rarer than you'd think near a city.

The wood itself is mixed deciduous forest, and depending on the season you'll see bluebells in spring or a reasonable carpet of leaves come autumn. There are a few different routes you can take, nothing particularly challenging, so it works well for families wanting a bit of woodland air without the long-distance slog. The main paths are well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, though the undergrowth can get muddy after rain.

It's the kind of stop you'd fit in on a bigger Yorkshire trip rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Fox Hill Holiday Park or York Meadows just down the road, it's an easy detour. Combine it with a day in York itself and you've got a decent half-day sorted. Bugthorpe Grange, further out near the village of the same name, sits at the edge of similar countryside, so you're never far from this type of walking.

Worth the visit if you're in the area and fancy stretching your legs, but don't rearrange your plans around it. It's more of a bonus than a headline act.
