Banc Y Garth

The walk up Banc Y Garth from Tregaron is straightforward enough, but the reward is proper hill-walking country without the altitude slog. You're looking at maybe 500 metres of ascent depending on your route, which means you actually notice your legs working without it turning into an expedition.

From the top, the Cambrian Mountains roll out in all directions - moorland and rough grass, the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people come to mid-Wales to switch off. On a clear day you'll see for miles. On a cloudy one, which is often, you get that moody atmospheric thing that photographs well if you're into that sort of shot.

Walkers with decent boots and a bit of fitness will get the most from this. It's not a push-button viewpoint or a five-minute wonder. The path can be boggy after rain, which is almost always, so proper footwear matters. Families with young kids might find it a bit much unless they're keen types. Allow two to three hours for a decent outing including time at the summit.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of - no café, no facilities - so bring what you need. The nearest proper base is Tregaron itself, a solid little market town. If you're camping at Cambrian Mountains Glamping just down the road, this works perfectly as a half-day excursion. The Ceredigion hills aren't dramatic, but they're proper walking country and far quieter than Snowdonia.
