Balloch Mill

The ruins of Balloch Mill sit quietly on the edge of Crieff, a working watermill that dates back centuries and has been gradually reclaimed by the landscape. What you're looking at is essentially a stone skeleton - roofless, weathered, but still substantial enough to give you a real sense of scale and purpose. The mill sits beside the water that once powered it, and that's really the whole story: this is archaeology you can read through the bones of the structure itself.

Historically minded types will find it genuinely worth the small detour from Crieff town centre. You can still make out the grinding stones inside, and the engineering of how water was channelled through the building is surprisingly clear once you look. Kids might manage fifteen minutes, twenty if you're lucky and they're into that sort of thing. It's not a visitor attraction with interpretation boards or facilities - you show up, you look, you move on.

The nearest proper base is Crieff itself, about a mile away, which gives you decent access to the surrounding Perthshire countryside. There are several caravan and holiday parks within striking distance: Braidhaugh is closest, while Comrie Croft and Comrie Holiday Park sit a few miles further out towards Comrie. If you're doing a park holiday in the area and fancy something genuinely low-key and a bit different from the usual tourist trail, this works as a quick morning walk. The setting's pleasant rather than spectacular, and it's the kind of place that gets under your skin more in retrospect than it does on the day.
