Ballayan Tops

The walk up Ballayan Tops takes you out of Glasgow's orbit and into proper Stirling country, where the Scottish Lowlands start to feel like they mean business. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a rounded hill that rewards you with views across to the Campsies and down towards the Forth Valley. The summit itself is straightforward enough, a couple of hours up from the nearest parking, and the path is well-trodden without being rammed.

This is walker territory, plain and simple. If you're after dramatic ridge work or technical scrambling, you'll be disappointed. But if you want a solid morning out with proper Highland views without needing a full day's expedition, Ballayan Tops does the job. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the steady slog a bit much.

Timing matters here. Early morning gets you up and down before the weather turns, which it often does in the Lowlands. There's nothing stopping you going year-round, though winter can be boggy on the lower stretches. Free to access, naturally - it's a Scottish hill.

Stay at one of the nearby glamping spots - Endrick Escape or Duncan Family Farms are both within spitting distance - and you've got a proper base for exploring the area. The WHW Hotel & Campsite is closest if you want something more straightforward. Ballayan Tops works nicely as a morning mission before heading back towards Glasgow or pushing on into the Trossachs.
