Balfarg Henge

A Bronze Age circle of standing stones, Balfarg Henge sits just outside Glenrothes in Fife - a proper piece of Scotland's prehistoric past that most visitors to the area completely miss. What you're looking at is a ritual monument from around 3000 BC, though what survives today is a far cry from its original scale. Four stones remain upright, weathered grey things that have watched over the Fife countryside for millennia. They're arranged in a rough circle, and if you use your imagination you can picture the ceremony and gathering that once happened here.

The site itself is straightforward - accessible 24/7 and free, which is brilliant. It's not a destination that will keep you occupied for hours, mind you. Twenty minutes to wander round, read the interpretation board, and take it in is about right. Worth the visit if you're staying nearby, less worth a special trip on its own. History buffs and anyone interested in Bronze Age ritual sites will find it genuinely moving. Families with young kids might struggle unless they're the type to spark up with ancient stones.

The landscape around here is fairly flat and unremarkable, which rather adds to the loneliness of the stones themselves.
