Balbirnie stone circle (original site)

Standing in a field just outside Glenrothes, you're looking at stones that were arranged here over 4,000 years ago. The Balbirnie stone circle isn't some dramatic heap of megalithic drama - it's more understated than that, which actually makes it rather special. What you get is a genuine Bronze Age burial site with a proper circle of standing stones, the sort of thing that makes you think about who put them here and why.

It's free to visit and you can access it more or less whenever you like, though there's no visitor infrastructure to speak of. Allow yourself twenty minutes to walk around and take it in properly - longer if you're the type to stand and ponder Bronze Age ritual practices. The site sits right next to Balbirnie Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, which makes it dead convenient if you're staying in the area. Kingdom Caravan Park is another couple of miles on if you prefer.

Walkers will appreciate it, particularly if you're combining it with other Fife attractions. History enthusiasts should definitely stop by - it's the real deal, not a reconstruction. Families with restless kids might find it a bit sparse unless they're already keen on archaeology. The landscape around Glenrothes isn't dramatic, but that's not really the point here. You're standing in the same spot people stood in before written history began. That's worth the detour.
