Baker's Wood

Baker's Wood sits just outside Lingfield, a proper little slice of Sussex woodland that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards anyone who bothers to find it. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, ancient-looking oaks tower overhead, and the air smells exactly like a forest should - damp earth and decomposing wood. Paths wind through without much fussing about, and you can genuinely get lost in a good way here.

It's the kind of place walkers actually enjoy rather than just endure. The canopy does a proper job of blocking the sky, so even on hot days it stays cool. There's genuine peace here - the kind that makes you wonder why you don't visit woodlands more often. Families with younger kids might find an hour enough before everyone gets restless; older ones could happily spend half a day exploring and climbing on fallen trees. History types won't find much to get excited about - this is working woodland, not some heritage site - but that's partly why it works so well. It's just trees doing what trees do.

If you're based at Worth Forest Glamping or Hook Farm Campsite, both within easy driving distance, Baker's Wood makes a cracking morning or late-afternoon walk. Free access, no visitor centre nonsense, no car parks that cost a fiver. Just woodland. Go when it's been dry for a few days - muddy paths are part of the charm until they're genuinely ankle-deep.
