Backhouse Wood

The woodland around Backhouse Wood, just inland from Hythe, offers a proper escape from the Kent coast without venturing far. It's a working forest rather than a manicured country estate - tall conifers mixed with deciduous trees, muddy paths that actually feel like you're somewhere, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the caravan site in the first place.

Walkers get the most from this one. The terrain is gently undulating with decent footpaths threading through, nothing punishing but enough to work the legs properly over an hour or so. If you're camping at Port Lympne Safari Park nearby, this is ideal for morning walks before the heat gets up - a proper alternative to another lap around the drive-through enclosure. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes; there's no dramatic views or clearings to aim for, just consistent woodland.

The forest sits well within a wider walking triangle - Hythe itself is walkable for shops and the seafront, while the Romney Marsh landscape spreads out not far south. It's genuinely free access, the sort of place Kentish locals use regularly and visitors mostly miss.

Best visited mid-week in autumn or early spring when the paths are firm but not baked. Summer can feel airless under the canopy. Allow an hour minimum to make the trip worthwhile from your holiday park base, longer if you're the type who actually stops to notice the trees.
