Attlee Park

A former colliery site turned nature reserve just outside Ashington - Attlee Park is proof that industrial wastelands can come back to life. The whole thing's built on what used to be spoil heaps from the mining days, but now it's rough grassland, scrubby woodland, and a series of lagoons that pull in birdwatchers from across the region.

There's a decent network of paths threading through, though don't expect manicured trails. This is proper nature reserve territory - muddy after rain, overgrown in summer, and genuinely wild. You'll see lapwings, redshank, and if you're lucky, the occasional barn owl hunting at dusk. Photographers come here too, though it's less Instagram-friendly than some spots and all the better for it.

The lagoons are the main draw. They're shallow and weedy, which sounds unimpressive until you realise that's exactly what wading birds and waterfowl want. Allow an hour or two depending on how seriously you take your birding. It's free to wander, though opening times aren't always clear - best to check ahead.

Families get something real here rather than a polished attraction. Kids can explore properly, spot birds without crowds, and understand how land recovers. If you're based at Parkdean Resorts Sandy Bay or Church Point, both within five miles, this makes a cracking half-day escape. Walkers especially appreciate it - the landscape's honest and the solitude genuine.
