Ashlyn Woods

Walk into Ashlyn Woods and you're immediately surrounded by proper old-growth woodland - the kind where the trees block out half the sky and the ground squelches underfoot even in dry weather. It's a decent stretch of mixed forest east of Royston, with paths that meander through without being too rigorous, though they can get boggy after rain so bring appropriate footwear.

This is walker territory, frankly. If you're after dramatic vistas or a quick twenty-minute stroll, look elsewhere. But if you want to spend a couple of hours among ancient trees, listening for woodpeckers and spotting the occasional muntjac deer, it delivers. There's something genuinely restorative about it - no interpretive panels, no visitor centre, just woodland as it should be.

The woods work brilliantly as part of a park holiday in the area. You're only a short drive from Guilden Gate Glamping, which sits at five stars and makes a brilliant base if you're after something a touch more comfortable than traditional camping. The Ashridge Farm Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is slightly further out but equally well-positioned for woodland exploration. Neither location feels like you're roughing it entirely.

Bring decent boots, a map or GPS app - the paths aren't clearly signed - and allow at least ninety minutes if you want to actually see the place rather than just pass through. Spring and autumn are best; summer brings the midges, winter brings the mud.
