Ash Bed

The woodland around Ash Bed, just outside Longney in Gloucestershire, is one of those quiet corners you'll stumble upon if you're exploring the Forest of Dean area properly. It's genuinely understated - no grand visitor centre or marked trails, just proper forest where ash trees dominate and the ground stays boggy even after decent weather.

What makes it worth a wander is the sheer sense of being away from things. The trees are tall and dense, light filters through in that particular way only old woodland manages, and if you time it right you'll have the place to yourself. Bring decent boots though - it can be waterlogged. There's no formal parking that I could find, so you'll need to work out access carefully from the nearby roads.

It's the sort of place walkers and nature types will genuinely enjoy rather than families after a quick outing. You're not looking at dramatic views or facilities - just authentic woodland. Allow an hour or two depending on how much you fancy poking about.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites nearby - Baldwin's Brook is closest at under three miles, or Passage Farm if you want something slightly further out - this works as a morning walk before heading to busier attractions. It's the antidote to polished tourist spots, the kind of place that reminds you why people move to the countryside. Free, obviously, and open whenever you fancy it.
