Arniefoul Round Cairn

You'll find this Bronze Age cairn sitting alone on the moorland south of Forfar, a low stone mound that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards the effort to get there. Arniefoul is a proper example of what these prehistoric structures actually looked like before Victorian archaeologists started excavating them - it's genuinely circular, built from stacked stones, and the scale of it hits you when you're standing beside it. The walk out across the moorland takes maybe twenty minutes from the nearest road access, depending on your route, and the landscape around it is bleak in the best possible way. No crowds, no visitor centre, just you and several thousand years of history.

This is one for serious walkers and archaeology enthusiasts rather than families looking for a quick photo stop. The area around Forfar has several other Bronze Age sites scattered across it, so if you're into that period you could spend a decent afternoon hunting them down. Allow an hour or two, bring decent boots because the ground gets boggy, and check the weather first - exposure on the moors is real. Winter's not ideal unless you're after that moody, desolate vibe.
