Ardchattan Priory

The ruins of Ardchattan Priory sit on a quiet peninsula jutting into Loch Etive, about three miles south of Oban. What you get is a remarkably intact 13th-century monastery - not just scattered stones, but actual walls you can walk through, a proper sense of the space monks once occupied.

The priory was founded in 1230 and belonged to the Valliscaulian order, which is fairly niche as medieval monasteries go. You'll find the church itself in decent condition, and the cloister gives you a real feel for daily monastic life. The setting is the thing that stays with you though - surrounded by woodland, with views across the loch. On a clear day it's genuinely worth lingering.

Historically-minded visitors will spend a good hour here. Kids might manage twenty minutes unless they're into ruins. There's no visitor centre or tea shop, so come prepared. Access appears to be open year-round, though check before driving out.

It works well as a stop between Oban and Loch Awe - you're within striking distance of Loch Awe Holiday Park and the Oban Camping and Caravanning Club Site, both under five miles away. The walk from the car park is short and easy, which suits a park-based holiday where you're mixing gentle exploration with proper hiking elsewhere.

The ruins aren't dramatic or Instagram-friendly, but they're genuine and peaceful. Worth the detour if you're already in Argyll.
