Ard Crags East Summit

The walk up Ard Crags feels shorter than it actually is, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on your fitness level. Starting from the Keswick side, you're looking at a proper Lake District fell - steep in places, boggy underfoot when wet, and genuinely rewarding once you crest that eastern summit.

What you get at the top is the thing. On a clear day, you've got views across to Catbells and down into Borrowdale that make the huffing and puffing feel justified. The summit itself is modest - no dramatic peak, just a fell-top with the sense that you've actually achieved something. It takes most walkers around two hours up and an hour and a half down, so budget three hours minimum if you're taking your time.

Families with older kids will manage this fine. Younger ones might struggle with the steep sections, and there's nothing at the top except views and bragging rights, so don't expect them to stay long. Serious walkers often bag it as part of a longer circuit with nearby peaks.

This is proper free walking - no fees, no gates, just Lakeland fell as it should be. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby, particularly Castlerigg Hall or Keswick Camping Club, both within an easy drive, you could easily slot this into a half-day outing. Pair it with a visit to Keswick itself if the weather turns rough. Wear decent boots and bring a map - the descent can be confusing in mist.
