Ancient Tree - Holly

You'll find this ancient holly standing alone near Killin, a gnarled and weathered specimen that's been growing for centuries. It's the sort of tree that stops you in your tracks - massive, twisted, with bark that tells a thousand stories of Scottish winters and dry summers. The thing is properly old, and that weight of age settles on you when you get close.

It's not a major attraction, so don't expect crowds or facilities. This is a spot for people who actually like trees, or those chasing the peculiar satisfaction of standing in front of something genuinely, verifiably ancient. Walkers pass through regularly enough, and there's something quietly moving about it if you're into that sort of thing. Kids might find it interesting for five minutes, then want to move on - it's not interactive, just a tree, albeit an exceptional one.

There's no visitor centre or admission charge as far as I can tell. You simply rock up when you're in the area, which most people do while exploring the broader Glen Lochay trails or stopping between Killin and the wider Tay valley walks. If you're staying at Loch Tay Highland Lodges, this makes a straightforward detour - under three miles away - on a morning ramble. Worth ten minutes of your time if you're passing. Don't plan a trip around it alone, but if you're hiking the area anyway, seek it out.
