An Dunan, dun site

Perched on a low hill near Tarbert, An Dunan is the remains of an Iron Age dun - essentially a fortified stone structure that would have been home to someone of local importance around two thousand years ago. What you're actually looking at today is the ruins of thick defensive walls, tumbled and eroded, but still impressive enough to get a sense of how commanding this site once was.

The walk up takes ten minutes or so, and the views across the surrounding landscape are genuinely good - you can see why someone chose to build here. This is proper archaeological stuff rather than a flashy visitor centre experience. There are no crowds, no cafes, no interpretation boards explaining every stone. It's just you, the ruins, and the wind.

Historically minded visitors will find it worthwhile, particularly if you're already exploring Argyll's Iron Age heritage. Families with older kids who enjoy a bit of a scramble will get something out of it too. Younger children might find it a touch underwhelming - there's not much to do beyond poking about the stones for twenty minutes.

It's free and open year-round, though winter weather can make the site muddy and less pleasant. If you're staying at nearby Killegruer Caravan Site or Muasdale Holiday Park, it's an easy side trip worth half your morning. Pair it with a walk around Tarbert itself or the coastal paths nearby to make a proper half-day out of it.
