Alston Wood

You'll find Alston Wood just outside Preston, a proper working forest that feels worlds away from the city despite being barely a stone's throw from it. It's woodland in the real sense - not a manicured country estate, but a place where locals actually come to walk their dogs and stretch their legs without the crowds you'd get at a tourist hotspot.

The forest offers decent walking routes through mixed woodland. The paths are manageable rather than demanding, which suits families with younger kids perfectly well. You're looking at anything from a gentle 20-minute stroll to a couple of hours if you fancy exploring deeper. The canopy is thick enough to feel like proper forest, and there's a real sense of being tucked away even though Preston's just south.

Historically, Lancashire's forests have always been important - this one included - though Alston Wood doesn't come with the grand visitor facilities or heritage signage you'd find at more polished attractions. That's partly its appeal. It's the sort of place you'd come back to repeatedly rather than tick off once.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Dale Hey Farm or Beacon Fell View are closest at under three miles - this makes a solid half-day outing. Pack a decent pair of walking boots; the ground can be muddy depending on the season. Free to access and genuinely useful if you need to burn off energy between bigger attractions rather than a destination in itself. Go for the walk, not the facilities.
