You can walk the perimeter if access permits, and the surrounding moorland rolls out in a way that makes Preston feel miles away, though it's barely thirty minutes off. The water itself is flanked by rough grassland and low vegetation - industrial infrastructure visible but not aggressively shoved in your face. It's the sort of place you come if you're already staying locally rather than driving over specially.

Families with older kids who actually enjoy walking will get the most out of this. Very young children might find it a bit bleak and exposed, especially if the weather turns damp - which in Lancashire, it will.
