Allt Filo

The walk up Allt Filo from Brecon isn't dramatic - no jagged ridges or heart-stopping scrambles - but that's rather the point. This is proper Welsh hill country, the kind where you can actually breathe and think and notice things. The peak sits on the eastern edge of the Brecon Beacons, and the approach is a steady grind through moorland that opens onto surprisingly wide views across Mid Wales. On a clear day you can see for miles in every direction, which makes the effort feel worthwhile even if you're not a seasoned fell-walker.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from Brecon itself - longer if you're bringing children or stopping to actually look around. It's the sort of walk where families with reasonable fitness get something genuine from it without needing special equipment or mountain experience. Dogs love it too. The terrain is mostly grass and bracken underfoot, muddy in wet weather but never technically difficult.

Brecon sits bang in the middle of the Beacons, so Allt Filo works well as a half-day outing between other activities in the area. Pencelli Castle Caravan & Camping Park and Cefn Cantref Campsite both put you within striking distance. Worth doing on the way in or out rather than planning your whole holiday around it, honestly - it's a solid warm-up walk, not a destination peak. The views are good rather than spectacular, and you're looking at moorland rather than dramatic scenery. But sometimes that's exactly what you need.
