About Allt Ddu
It's a walker's hill, not a tourist attraction. Bring boots, bring water, give yourself a couple of hours if you're moving at a reasonable pace. There's no café at the top, no visitor centre, no gift shop. What you get is grass, rock, and space - which, frankly, is why you came to the Beacons in the first place.
Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find it tedious without the payoff of a summit building or something to point at. History buffs won't find much - this is about the landscape, not the past. If you're staying at Cefn Cantref Campsite or Pencelli Castle nearby, it makes an excellent morning mission before a lazy afternoon at the caravan park.
The best time is spring or autumn when you're not sweating through cloud cover, and when the light actually does what it's supposed to. Summer crowds on the Beacons tend to stick to Pen y Fan - their loss. This feels like genuine Mid Wales, not Brecon's postcard version.
