All Saints' Church, Newchurch

The churchyard sits on a gentle rise above Newchurch village, and you'll spot the distinctive red-brick tower long before you reach the gate. All Saints' is Victorian through and through - built in 1879 with that solid, no-nonsense craftsmanship the Victorians did so well. Inside, it's mercifully unfussy: good light floods through the windows, the wood is honest rather than ornate, and there's a real sense of a working parish church rather than a museum piece.

If you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Isle of Wight Coastal Park or Appuldurcombe Gardens are both close by - this makes an easy afternoon wander. Sandown's only a few miles away, so you could easily tack it onto a seaside day. The churchyard itself is worth lingering in, particularly if you're the sort who enjoys reading old gravestones. Victorian and Edwardian epitaphs tell you something genuine about Island life.

It won't consume hours of your time - twenty minutes inside, perhaps forty if you're thorough - but it's the kind of place that justifies a detour if you're passing through rather than a destination in itself. Worth stopping for if you're exploring the quieter parts of the Isle of Wight, less so if your holiday is entirely focused on beaches and theme parks. The real value is in the walk to get there and the sense of stepping away from the tourist trail.
