Merlsey Down

Standing at 140 metres above sea level, this chalk down offers some of the finest panoramic views on the Isle of Wight's southern coast. From the summit, you can see clear across to the mainland on a good day, with Sandown Bay stretching out below and the distinctive white cliffs of Culver Down visible to the east. The climb itself is fairly gentle - more of a steady uphill walk than a proper hike - making it accessible for most fitness levels.

Families with older children will find this a rewarding outing, though toddlers might struggle with the distance. The grassland at the top is perfect for a picnic, and there's something deeply satisfying about earning your lunch with a bit of effort. Dog walkers particularly love this spot - plenty of space to let them roam freely.

Allow about an hour for the round trip from Sandown, though you'll want longer if you're planning to linger at the top. The views are particularly spectacular at sunset, when the light catches the water beautifully. It's free to access and open all year round, though the paths can get muddy after rain. From holiday parks like Cheverton Copse or Old Barn Touring Park, it makes for a lovely morning constitutional before hitting the beach.
