Aled Isaf Reservoir

The drive up to Aled Isaf Reservoir takes you past pine forests and open moorland, and the moment you arrive, you understand why people make the effort. This is a proper mountain lake, ringed by steep slopes and dark conifers, with the kind of stillness that makes you want to sit quietly for a bit.

It's a working reservoir - water company property - but walkers are welcome to explore the paths around it. The walk itself is straightforward enough, nothing too taxing, and takes roughly an hour if you amble. The views shift as you go round: sometimes you're up high looking down at the water's surface, sometimes you're closer in among the trees. On a clear day, you can pick out Snowdon in the distance, which adds a bit to the drama.

This isn't a destination that'll keep you occupied for half a day. Come for the walk, the air, the light hitting the water at the right moment. History buffs won't find much - it's more about the landscape itself. Families with young walkers will manage fine if the kids can handle uneven paths without complaint.

Betws-y-Coed is your nearest town for supplies and somewhere to eat afterwards. Go early to dodge crowds, though honestly you won't find many people here whatever the time.
