Aldershot Park

The heath at Aldershot sprawls across Surrey's sandy soils with the kind of wild, undeveloped character that becomes rarer every year. It's working countryside rather than manicured parkland - gorse, heather and scattered birch trees cover the open ground, and you'll spot the occasional adder if you're lucky and quiet enough. The place sits just outside Farnham, making it an easy bolt-on to a weekend in the area without feeling like tourist infrastructure.

Walkers get the most from this reserve. The paths aren't exactly spectacular - no jaw-dropping vistas, no dramatic elevation changes - but they're genuinely pleasant for an hour or so of easy rambling. Families with restless children might find it a bit thin on entertainment, though the open spaces mean kids can run about safely. Ornithologists and wildflower types will have a proper field day, especially in late summer when the heather flowers out.

The nearby parks - Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat earns a solid five-star rating and sits just 4.3 miles away - make Aldershot Park a sensible half-day addition rather than a full day's outing. You could easily combine it with time at one of the other residential parks, or use it as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Not somewhere to plan your entire trip around, but if you're already staying in the Farnham area, it's well worth an hour's exploration. Free access, obviously, and there's no need to book ahead.
