Airdit Hill

The walk up Airdit Hill from St Andrews takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a decent pace, and the effort pays off with views across the Fife coast that stretch all the way to the Forth. It's not a high peak - nowhere near alpine - but the moorland walk itself is the proper reward here, rolling grass and scrubland that feels properly remote despite being minutes from one of Scotland's most famous towns.

What you get at the top is a 360-degree view of the landscape: St Andrews spread below, the sea beyond, and on clear days you can make out across the water. The hill isn't dramatic or rocky - it's an honest moorland summit with nothing fancy about it. That's exactly why it works so well for families who want a genuine hill walk without the scrambling or significant danger, and for serious walkers it makes a good morning outing before heading into town for lunch.

If you're based at Craigtoun Meadows Holiday Park or Larick Campsite - both strong options in the area - Airdit Hill is close enough for a half-day outing without eating into time at Fife's other attractions. Clayton Caravan Park is nearer but less highly rated. There's no charge to walk it, and you're free to go any time. Weather matters though: on a grey, damp Scottish day the moorland can feel bleak and visibility drops fast. Pick a decent morning, give yourself two to three hours including a rest at the top, and you'll understand why people keep coming back.
