The Adventure Garden sits just outside Sheffield and delivers exactly what the name promises - a place where you can actually do things rather than just walk around gawping. It's an interactive space designed for families who can't bear another afternoon of trailing round a museum while the kids complain about sore feet.

You're looking at outdoor activities and play installations rather than a traditional garden layout. Climbing structures, balance challenges, that sort of thing. It works best for children aged roughly 5 to early teens, though adults won't feel completely out of place if they're willing to have a go themselves. The whole setup takes a couple of hours to properly explore without rushing.

The good news is it won't break the bank - admission is reasonable and it's free to wander if you've got a park pass. Timing-wise, weekday mornings beat weekends by a mile if you want to avoid school groups.

If you're based at one of the local glamping spots - Boots and Bubbles is particularly well-rated and only 5 miles away - the Adventure Garden works perfectly as a half-day activity between longer walks or trips into Sheffield itself. Hoodlands Farm is another solid option at under 6 miles out. Neither park will feel like wasted time if the weather turns damp and the kids need burning off some energy indoors.

Worth the detour? If you've got under-12s in tow and you're staying locally, absolutely. For adults without children, spend your time elsewhere.
