Abinger Motte

Earthworks and imagination go hand in hand at this Norman motte, where a grassy mound marks the spot where medieval lords once ruled from their wooden tower. The raised circular platform, dating from around 1100, sits quietly in woodland near Westcott, surrounded by the defensive ditch that once kept enemies at bay. What you see today is essentially a large green hillock, but it's the history beneath your feet that makes it worth the short walk through Abinger Common.

Families with older children who love castle stories will get the most from a visit here. Younger ones might find it harder to picture the timber keep that once crowned this artificial hill. The site is always accessible and costs nothing to explore, though there's precious little in the way of interpretation boards to flesh out the story.

Allow about 30 minutes to walk around the motte and absorb the atmosphere. The setting in ancient woodland is properly atmospheric on a misty morning, and you'll often have the place to yourself.
