Abdon Church

The little stone church at Abdon sits quietly on a hillside near Bridgnorth, easy to miss if you're not paying attention. Built in the 12th century, it's one of those places where the walls feel genuinely old - dark stone, narrow windows, the sort of space that makes you drop your voice without thinking about it.

Inside, there's a proper medieval font and some decent carved stonework if you know what to look for. The churchyard itself is worth lingering in, with views across the Shropshire countryside that justify the walk up to find it. On a clear day you can see a fair distance.

Truthfully, this isn't a destination in itself. You won't spend more than half an hour here unless you're seriously into Norman architecture. But if you're staying at Wheathill Touring Park - just three miles away - and fancying a gentle walk with some historical bones to it, Abdon ticks that box. It appeals most to walkers and church enthusiasts rather than families wanting something to do for an afternoon.

The access appears to be straightforward, though it's worth checking locally before you go, as opening times aren't always obvious for smaller rural churches. Best visited in daylight hours and as part of a wider walking route rather than on its own merits.
