Wells

The cathedral spire piercing the Somerset sky announces Wells long before you see the town itself. England's smallest city might be compact, but it packs a proper punch with its stunning medieval architecture and cobbled streets that have barely changed in centuries.

Wells Cathedral dominates everything here - and rightly so. The Gothic facade is genuinely breathtaking, though the real treat lies in the scissor arches inside. They're architectural genius from the 14th century, supporting the tower when it started to sink. The Bishop's Palace next door feels like stepping into a fairy tale, complete with moat and swans that ring bells for food.

Market Place buzzes on Wednesdays and Saturdays, when local producers set up stalls around the medieval cross. The rest of the week it's pleasantly quiet, perfect for wandering between independent shops and cafes. Pop into the Crown at Wells for a decent pint - it's been serving locals since the 15th century.

The Mendip Hills roll away in all directions, offering brilliant walking territory. Knowle Hill and Ben Knowle Hill provide cracking views across the Somerset Levels, while Hembury Hill makes for a good afternoon ramble through ancient woodlands. The area around Ben Knowle Wood and Hembury Wood is particularly lovely in spring when the bluebells are out.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Wells sits on the A39, about 20 miles south of Bristol. Regular buses connect to Bath and Weston-super-Mare if you fancy a day trip to the coast. Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to explore the city on foot, yet surrounded by some of Somerset's finest countryside for proper outdoor adventures.
