Knowle Hill

Climbing Knowle Hill gives you proper views across the Somerset Levels without the crowds that plague Glastonbury Tor. The walk up isn't particularly taxing - about twenty minutes from the nearest parking spot - but the reward at the top makes it well worth the effort. On clear days you can see right across to the Quantock Hills and even catch glimpses of the Bristol Channel.

Walkers and photographers will get the most from this spot, especially in the early morning when mist often hangs over the levels below. Families with older children should manage the ascent fine, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the summit. The hill sits just outside Wells, making it an easy detour if you're exploring the cathedral city.

Timing matters here. Go too late in the day and you'll be walking straight into the setting sun on your way up. Early evening can be lovely though, particularly in summer when the light catches the patchwork fields below. Allow about an hour for the round trip, longer if you want to sit and take in the scenery properly.
