Wells Leisure Centre

The leisure centre sits right in Wells itself, a proper working sports facility rather than a tourist attraction in the traditional sense. You'll find a swimming pool, gym, and various sports courts inside - the sort of place locals actually use, not somewhere that exists purely for visitors passing through.

It's worth knowing about if you're staying at Bobsfield Campsite, a six-mile drive away, and the kids need burning off or you fancy a swim. The pool is decent enough, and if anyone in your group is seriously into badminton or squash, they can get a court. The gym won't win awards, but it does the job.

What it's not is a day-long activity. You're looking at maybe two hours if you're making a proper go of it - an hour in the pool, perhaps, plus a shower and a wander around. Most people use it as a quick pit stop between proper sightseeing, particularly when the weather's rubbish and you need to get indoors without spending a fortune.

You'll need to check opening hours and admission prices directly - they're not listed online anywhere obvious - but expect standard leisure centre fees. Nothing fancy, nothing expensive. If you're based at the campsite and rainy days are forecast, ring ahead and confirm what's on. Otherwise, Wells Cathedral and the town centre's market square are far more compelling reasons to be in the area.
